WHAT MAKES US STOP AND LOOK?
HOW DO WE SEE?
In my work I try to distil the joy I find in colour, patterns and shapes, and the energy in nature which is never still. I try to work out what makes me stop and look.
I live rurally and love being outdoors. My inspiration comes from nature juxtapositioned with man-made stuff – harbour walls, large ships, junk, building edges and the view behind.
My art is an attempt at communicating how I see things and why I find something interesting or exciting or emotional. I’m curious to know if it resonates with others.
My art is not meant to copy nature. It’s about trying to represent why nature is inspiring and look at our place within it. I like to play between the transition from figurative to abstract.
I worked with acrylics for a long time before I came across the fluid acrylic method. Using fluid materials that move on the painting's surface creates organic shapes and forms a base for picking out natural patterns. Sometimes I don’t need to manipulate the outcome apart from colour and composition choices, at other times I may continue to move the paint or use the dry patterns as a base or in collage. I also use more traditional heavy body acrylic paints for figurative land and seascapes and if it will help with energy, pattern or texture I may incorporate some fluid techniques in these too.
I like to play between the transition from figurative to abstract.
